As part of our consideration to teach a coherently and progressively planned curriculum, children at St Mary’s are taught many of their foundation subjects through a carousel teaching style. During the afternoon session each Monday and Tuesday, pupils divide into 2 year groups (Years 1 and 2, 3 and 4, 5 and 6) and are taught for 45 minutes each, by our subject leaders. This ensures staff who have a subject responsibility teach their subject right across the school, to maximise progressive teaching of knowledge and skills and to enable them to have a clear understanding of curriculum coverage for all year groups. The timetable is then structured and sessions are never missed or substituted. We are able to deliver our broad and bespoke curriculum with a robust approach. By Wednesday pupils have covered 6 foundation subjects with their teachers. Teachers explain they really enjoy getting to know each child and teaching the whole school. Science, History and Geography are also taught in key stage dual year groups, to ensure precise age appropriate content is covered during lessons. This is a huge celebration for St Mary’s and our teaching style that promotes high attainment and rapid progress of children’s learning.
